McIver describes his first days as a student at the University of Virginia, mentioning the great learning of assistant language professor S.E.W. Becker; good food at his place of boarding including chicken and dessert twice a week; attendence at shows in town where students hiss the ladies and bully the citizens; and two recent "calathumps."
